Ship Island Part: 2
Welcome back my fellow Adventurers to a much anticipated location episode! You will finally be able to read about my adventure to Ship Island! I had so much fun, and if you can't tell by the last video I posted Spirit really enjoyed himself too. So without further adieu...let's get started!
As I have said before, in order to get to Ship Island you have to take a ferry. The ferry docks at a harbor next to Jones Park in Gulfport, MS. The entrance is on the left side of a massive pavillion type area. You can't miss it. I do recommend buying your tickets in advance online. That way you can just check in and head to the ferry. Get there early because seats fill up fast. The ferry ride lasts about 45min to an hour and there are snacks available while you enjoy the ride. Be sure to bring extra money because food and drinks on the boat and on the island are not included in the cost of the ferry ticket. Be sure to keep an eye out for dolphins as well. They love playing around the ferry.
The island, as I have said is mostly wetlands. Surprisingly, lots of birds call this place home, and you never know what sort of sea creatures you'll see. The ferry docks on the north side of the island. From there you will have to walk on the boardwalk to get to the south side. During this trip you can see a lot of crabs in the videos I've shared. While on other trips I've also seen a lot of hermit crabs, large fish, jellyfish, and stingrays. You can always see at least one of these creatures on the north side. The large fish and stingrays don't really hang out on the south side, but the rest do, and like the north side it is different every time.
To ge to the south side you'll walk about a 1/3 of a mile on the boardwalk through the wet lands area. You can even go in and explore Fort Massachusetts. The Park Rangers even do really cool tours where they will explain the forts unique history. There are even a couple of real cannons. Those things are massive!
There are bathrooms on both sides of the island; however, the concession stand/ gift shop and chair and umbrella rentals are all located on the South Side. The burgers and chicken quesadillas I highly recommend trying. They are fantastic!
On the south side you can swim, float, sun bath, shell hunt (make sure no creatures call it home first), and fish (with a legal mississippi fishing license). I personally love to swim and shell hunt. I can normally find some pretty nice shells.
The water is always cool and feels fantastic. Just be careful of all the hit sand. The sand and boardwalk can easily get up to 150 degrees on a hot day. Well that pretty much wraps up this location episode. Don't forget to check back on Saturday as Spirit wraps up the week!
Until next time my fellow Adventurers!
